Thanks for that. Very interesting.  :-D

It started ringing a few bells about the Brontes. I think (if memory serves me right) there was an old mansion in those school grounds called Upperwood House where Charlotte Bronte worked for some time as a governess. Indeed I think her father met his wife through a headmaster of the school.

I'll be spending ages now trying to dig that book out.  :frantic:

Aww no problem Sheila glad you liked it. I've done a bit of diggin and found this picture of the tower on the 'mound' with this little piece of writing:

"Hidden in the grounds of Woodhouse Grove School, a derelict tower can be glimpsed through the trees. The local unemployed of Apperley Bridge, near Bradford helped Robert Elam build this tower in the early 1800's, once he had built the school. The three storey castellated tower lies forgotten and ruined."

Hey Sheila you would love it at Brontë House as it's quite a lovely stately building.
The dorms were named after various characters from their books - one called 'Reed' (from Jane Eyre?) and 'Miller' (also from Jane Eyre? - I don't know as I've never been a massive fan of the books) :p

There was also some secret areas within the house/school. When you entered the building to your left would be the hallway with the stairs running up from the opposite side of where you entered. Upon reaching the top of the landing there was a dormitory immediately ahead of you which was formerly the servants quarters I believe.
Ok this is no joke.

In this room on the very left was a massive fireplace with bookcases within the wall either side. Now on the left of the mantlepiece on top of the fire place was a small indentation in which lay a hidden button. If you pressed it the bookcase on the left would spring open to reveal a secret area that led to the top floor!! Strange isn't it and more like the type of thing you would read in one of their novels lol.

I asked some friends just now on facebook what they knew about what we all called the 'Mound'. The female ghost is supposed to be the ghost of McCrayner (spelling?) who was a nurse from the sanitorium (what we termed the 'san' which used to be right next to the school church but is now near the girl's boarding area).
Now I had never heard of this McRayner and the reason is because it was the name of one of the girls' dorms - the one I mentioned overlooks the mound. This dorm was supposed to be haunted and the girls were told from dorm prefects that other girls over the generations would have their faces scratched and their hair gently pulled. I cannot confirm the credibility of this as these were stories passed down to them from over 100 years ago.

I also found out why Elan's tower was disbanded - considering that it is merely around 100 meters from the front of the school (even less from the swimming pool) and is in fairly good condition in terms of infrastructure. During the course of its construction the tower was built by the unemplyed people from around the local area. Now one of these workers supposedly fell from the top of the tower to his death, and thus Robert Elan put a halt to its construction to which it has remained derelict ever since.
I used to think the ghost there was the ghost of his wife, though it's supposedly that of McRayner who died as a result of the smallpox epidemic around the 1800s which she probably contracted from a patient at the sanitorium.

Yes, 'Reed' and 'Miller' are characters from Jane Eyre. Mrs Reed was Jane's wicked aunt and Miss Miller was one of the teachers at Lowood, the charity school that Jane attended.

Sounds as if there's plenty at your old school to fire children's imagination.  :scared:...Interesting place by the sounds of it. Could probably do with an investigation by a group other than Ofsted.  :whistling: :snigger:

I see that there's a book on the school's history by a Frank Pritchard. Have you read it?

No but I have heard of it actually. Yes I'm getting rather nostalgic so I do apologise about that.

I found this about mediums and the sisters:
