Welcome to Otherworld North East!

Welcome to the Otherworld North East website. Otherworld North East (OWNE for short) is a paranormal (specifically ghostlore) research and investigation website and investigation team, based specifically within the North East of England (and established in August 2003). Our geographical coverage revolves around Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and Teesside, with the occasional investigation in Cumbria and beyond (we have done investigations in Scotland and Wales).

The aims of Otherworld North East are to examine and investigate alleged ghostly sightings and hauntings, in an attempt to prove or disprove that the phenomena people experience are real or otherwise. It is not our aim to prove the existance of life after death, rather to catalogue the physical phenomena associated with what are commonly known as ghosts, no matter what their source may be.

The Ghost of La Sagesse
Article by Sheila Convey

La Sagesse, a private school in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne is being forced to close this summer after the nuns from the Catholic order that founded it, and a convent on the site have trebled the rent on the building that they still own. Will the ghost of the Pink Lady who is reputed to appear round the school from classrooms to corridors still continue her rounds?

The Body Snatchers
Article by Sheila Convey

Dissection of the human body to gain knowledge of structure and function is rooted in antiquity. Anatomy is the study of the way we are made and is considered the cornerstone of scientific medicine. However it has a history, which at times was grisly and scandalous.

The Battle of Newburn
Article by Andrea Snell

If you were asked to name a battle from history quite a few would spring to mind:  the Battle of Hastings, the Battle of Culloden or the Battle of Britain to name only a few. One that wouldn’t automatically spring to mind would be the Battle of Newburn or the Battle of Stella Haugh as some may call it. This however doesn’t mean that this battle was any less significant than any other. In fact it was catalyst to the start of Civil War.

The High Level Bridge
Article by Sheila Convey

The High Level Bridge that spans the River Tyne is a combined railway and road bridge with two decks and is Grade I listed. The brilliant engineer Robert Stephenson assisted by Thomas Elliot Harrison built it in the 19th century. It is being renovated at present but it is a testament to his expertise that the last major work was carried out in the 1920’s.

The Schooner Hotel, Alnmouth
Article by Tony Liddell

The Schooner Hotel is situated at No. 8 on the west side of  Northumberland Street, Alnmouth, Alnwick, Northumberland (NGR NU 2466 1043), and has been subject to paranormal research interest for many years now.  The name ‘Schooner’ derives from a character of sailing ship (using fore and aft sails on more than one mast), first used by the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries and then developed in the Americas from the 18th century onwards.  Schooners were cargo vessels, capable of both ocean and coastal travel.

Pareidolia - an Explanation
Article by Sarah Hutchinson

It comes with little surprise that in the 21st Century nearly all so-called paranormal investigators use photography in some way. Cameras, both digital and analogue are easily come by these days ranging from your £4.99 use-once-only film cameras through to £1000+ digital SLRs. So no matter what your budget it you're guaranteed to find a camera to suit. Most of us are introduced to cameras from a young age, usually by being told we have to pose and say "cheese" as a child. Many people presume that because they have pretty much always used cameras in one form or another, they are capable of deciphering what different images contain.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon
Article by Sarah Hutchinson

EVP is said to be the recordings of voices of a paranormal origin (largely claimed to be from beyond the grave) caught on some form of recording device. Sometimes these "voices" are recorded through background noise such as white noise while others are recorded directly onto a recording device without any background noise at all. The recordings are typically one word/sound in length but have sometimes been longer sentences or phrases.
